(TITC) - Located under the basalt soil hill closing to the seashore in Vinh Linh District, Quang Tri Province, Vinh Moc Tunnels used to be the military fortress of Vinh Moc’s army and people to fight against the fierce raids of American Empire and Sai Gon puppet government during 8 years (1965-1972).
Dug for 2 years (1965-1967), Vinh Moc Tunnels have a total length of over 2,000m and consist of 3 floors. The first floor (about 13m under the ground) was the living place of people. The second floor (15m under the ground) was the headquarters of Party Committee, Commission and Command of the armed forces. The third floor (23m under the ground) was used to avoid bombs, store food and weapons. From the main tunnel, the tunnel branches spread through 13 gates, of which 6 gates open to the hill and 7 gates open to the sea. The tunnels were constructed like a miniature village underground with all essential works, such as well, stove, infirmary, maternity hospital, operating room, information station, etc.
In addition to the tunnel system, Vinh Moc also includes some works on the ground such as trenches, fortifications, breakwater, etc.
Nowadays, to the display house of Vinh Moc, visitors have the opportunity to learn about the life of Vinh Moc’s army and people in the resistant war against American Empire through many photos and objects.
Vinh Moc Tunnels have been recognized as National Historical Site since 1976, and as Special National Relic since 2015. This is one of attractive sites in DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) tour, attracting many visitors, especially U.S veterans.
