The Bamboo Wings Restaurant and the Dai Lai Conference Hall in the Dai Lai Bamboo Complex, Vinh Phuc province recently won the gold award for resort building from the Architects Regional Council Asia (ARCASIA) 2014 and the Building of the Year award, respectively.
Bamboo Wings Restaurant and Cafeteria was designed based on the image of a flying crane. Using bamboo as the major material, the bird wing-like construction creates an open pavilion imbued with traditional Vietnamese architectural features.
Meanwhile, the Dai Lai Conference Hall provides visitors with a fresh and environmentally friendly experience by harmoniously combining bamboo and stone.
Both buildings were designed by architect Vo Trong Nghia, one of the pioneers of green architecture in Viet Nam. He has won numerous international prizes, including the ARCASIA gold medal in 2007 and 2011 and the 2012 Design Vanguard prize given by Architectural Record, a top American architectural magazine. In 2012, he was named Architect of the year by the Viet Nam Architects’ Association.
The ARCASIA awards are held annually to honour outstanding constructions in the categories of residential projects, public amenity buildings, industrial buildings, conservation projects, socially responsible architecture, and sustainability.
