Da Lat City in the central province of Lam Dong has officially been recognized as the City of Flower Festival according to an official dispatch No 2567/TTg-KGVX, signed by Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung on December 22, 2009.

The Government also asks the Lam Dong Provincial People’s Committee to closely co-operate with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and related agencies in organizing Da Lat Flower Festival 2010, one of the national events celebrating the 1,000th grand anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi.

Da Lat is now busy with preparation for the Da Lat Flower Festival 2010. Under the theme “Da Lat – a City of Thousand Flowers,” the festival will last for four days, beginning on January 1, 2010.  This is the third time Da Lat hosts such a kind of event with a view to introducing its floriculture potential and strength to national and international visitors and honoring flower farmers and floriculture.

There are a series of activities, including the launching of a flower planting campaign; embellishing a road of flowers, a tower of flowers, an island of flowers, an ancient street of flowers; and organizing an exhibition on flowers and ornamental trees, a wine festival night, as well as sport activities such as cycling, golf and mountain climbing.

According to the organising board, there will be a giant flower vase styled from bronze drums to be carried by 1,000 Da Lat citizens and tourists. This “living” vase will be organised on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street where there will also be a flower arranging competition.

Visitors will also have a chance to enjoy displays of flowers along the 25km highway from center city to Lien Khuong Airport. The organising board will reserve 4,000sq.m for flowers around Xuan Huong Lake, 9,500 sq.m for flowers in Bich Cau oasis and 3,500sq.m in the city’s flower garden. On display will be flowers and trees from other countries, including China, Japan and the Netherlands.

Da Lat annually grows around 2000 hectares of flowers of all kinds, yielding around 800 million branches of flowers. Da Lat flowers are exported to many countries. The city has organized successful two flower festivals, in 2005 and 2007, attracting many foreign and local visitors.
